FAQs

FAQs About Outdoor Kitchen, Fireplace, Patio Covers, & Hardscape Construction

Q. Is your company insured?
A. Yes, we are fully insured and all contractors who work for us are also required to carry liability insurance in the amount of a minimum of one million dollars.

Q. How long have you been in business?
A. Our company was founded in September of 2009 and the two partners of the company each have more than 20+ years of experience in the construction industry.

Q. Are you members of the Better Business Bureau?
A. Yes, and we have an A+ rating with the BBB.

Q. Will there be a mess in my yard from the construction of my project?
A. The amount of dust and debris will vary widely depending on the size and type of project we are building. Small outdoor stone projects will create a lot of dust and small chips of stone. Arbors/pergolas will also create sawdust and wood pieces that will be hauled away. Roofs, removal of existing decks or patios, and building larger projects can create large amounts of material waste and dust. No matter what size project you build, there will be some sort of dust or debris and there will always be a final cleanup of this material once your project is complete. Some larger projects may require multiple cleanups.

Q. Will you need to take down my fence in order to build my project in my backyard?
A. In 99% of the projects we build we will not need to remove any portion of your fence. Generally, we do not need to use any sort of heavy equipment and most materials are hand carried into and out of your yard. In some cases where we would need to remove large amounts of concrete or dirt or we need to bring in large objects that are too heavy to lift with manpower then we might need to use a bobcat for this type of project. If that is the case, then we might need to remove a small section of your fence for access.

Q. Do we need to keep our dog/pets out of the yard while you are building our outdoor living project?
A. Yes, we need you to secure your pets, so they are not in the construction area, this is important for their safety. If they must go out in the yard, then it is best that they have an adult supervisor to keep them out of the construction area.

Q. When is the best time of year to build a fireplace, outdoor kitchen, patio cover, or have our pool remodeled?
A. There is no actual “best” time of year to build any project, however, we are a lot busier between the months of March-September because many customers wait until spring or summer to plan on building their project. If you can decide what you want to build sooner, rather than later, then we will be able to start work on your outdoor living project quicker. Keep in mind that once you decide to build there are still many things that must happen before you can start actual construction. Building permits, engineering, and the number of projects that have been sold will affect how long it takes before construction can begin on your project. At the height of construction season this delay can be as much as 30-60 days or more depending on the size of the project.

Q. What is the difference between interlocking pavers such as Belgard pavers and stone pavers?
A. The main difference is that interlocking pavers like the Belgard pavers are manufactured in a plant from a mixture of minerals and then baked or kiln dried like how bricks are made. Stone pavers are cut from the quarry into slabs and they are a natural product. The interlocking pavers are a man-made product built in a factory. Most of the stone pavers we use are cut from limestone and are referred to as travertine pavers. Travertine pavers are usually about 1 inch thick and come in lighter colors. The Belgard pavers will vary in thickness from approx. 2 inches to 3 ¼ inches and they are much more durable than the travertine pavers. The Belgard pavers also come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes and offer a lifetime warranty, where the travertine pavers come with a one year warranty.

Q. I want to build a fire pit under my patio cover or arbor/pergola, can I do that?
A. We cannot build any fire pit underneath a patio cover or arbor/pergola due to fire & city codes in our area. Most cities require you to be 10 feet away from roofs, arbor/pergolas, fences, or anything combustible. Some cities require you to be 15 feet or more from your house or fence. In addition, some cities will not allow you to build any wood burning fire pit but will allow gas fire pits.

Q. How can I get an estimate for what a project might cost to build?
A. Give us a call or fill out our online “contact us” form and we will schedule a time to have one of our designers meet with you at your home to discuss your project.

Q. Do you sell outdoor kitchen appliances, or do we have to furnish them?
A. We sell some of the most popular brands of outdoor kitchen appliances such as Big Green Egg, Primo Grills, Blaze Grills, Lynx, Viking, Fire Magic, and Bull.

Q. Do you offer gas, plumbing, and electrical work?
A. Yes, we are a full service company and have both a licensed master plumber and master electrician on staff.

Q. What all can you build?
A. We build just about everything you can imagine including, pool cabanas, roofs, patio covers, arbors/pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fire pits, patio decks, swimming pool remodeling, retractable screens, driveway removal, and replacement. We offer landscape design and installation as well as landscape lighting.

Q. Do you do cleaning or repair work on BBQ grills, outdoor kitchens, concrete, or brick work?
A. We do not offer any type of cleaning or repair work on appliances. If you want to replace appliances in your existing outdoor kitchen then we may be able to do that, however it will usually require modification of existing stone or brick work because BBQ grills, doors, and other appliances are not all the same size. Grills and appliances are sometimes smaller, shorter, wider, etc. and that means you cannot simply buy a new BBQ grill remove the old one and drop the new one in place. It is also not possible to repair existing concrete other than filling cracks with epoxy or some sort of elastic caulking and we do not offer that type of service. We will remove and replace your existing concrete patio, driveway, pool deck, etc. with new material. We don’t do any sort of small brick repairs but can remove and replace existing fire places, fire pits, or outdoor kitchens with new brick or stone.

Q. How long will our outdoor kitchen appliances last?
A. If you purchase good quality stainless steel appliances, they could last you 15 years or longer. We do not recommend you buy any appliances that are not made from 100% stainless steel other than the ceramic grills made by Big Green Egg or Primo Grills, the reason is that they will rust and usually only last a few seasons before they need to be replaced. All appliances we offer for sale are well made by top manufacturers and should last a very long time.

Q. How long does it take to get a building permit from the city and what will they cost?
A. Each city is different and the costs that each city charges are different. Most cities take anywhere from 10-15 business days to issue a building permit, some are sooner depending on the size and type of work being done. Also, it usually takes longer to get permits at the height of construction season. Cost will vary widely and are partly determined by the size and cost of your project. Usually building permits start about $350 but can go to $1000 or more depending on the city you live in.

Q. Do all jobs require a building permit?
A. No, some jobs do not require a building permit, but this varies by city and type of work being done.

Q. When can I take down the building permit bag that is posted on my property?
A. Do not remove the building permit bag until after you have received your final inspection and have been told by your project manager that your job is 100% complete. If the building inspector comes to your house to do an inspection but the permit is not posted or has been removed, then the inspector can fail the inspection and impose a fine.

Q. What are your warranties?
A. We offer a one year warranty for stone, wood, electrical, and gas work that we do. Belgard pavers come with a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer on materials. Appliances are warranted by the manufacturer.

Q. Can I build in an easement?
A. No, you can not build anything in an easement unless you petition for and receive approval for a variance from the city.

Q. Which is better to build, a gable or a hip roof?
A. Gable roofs generally let in more light (unless the ends are closed), allow more air circulation, and usually will feel less closed in. Hip roofs offer more protection from the sun, wind, and rain but trap more heat and smoke from BBQ grills in the top of the roof. The type of roof that is best will usually be determined on what you are trying to accomplish.

Q. What type of countertops are available to be built on an outdoor kitchen?
A. Most of our outdoor kitchen countertops are made either from flagstone, limestone, or granite. There are also some man-made materials available as well as quartz and soapstone. Most customers find that the quartz and soapstone materials are too expensive and prefer to use flagstone, limestone, or granite. Marble should not be used as it is too soft of a material and it stains too easily for outdoor kitchen countertop use.

Q. Do Belgard pavers need to be sealed and will grass grow up between them?
A. Belgard pavers do not need to be sealed. Grass will not grow up from underneath the pavers however you can have grass seed transported by the wind that will sprout between the pavers, if this happens, we recommend you simply spray the grass sprouts while they are still small with any sort of grass killer. This will kill the grass and the root, so it will not grow back.

Q. How do you clean Belgard and/or travertine pavers?
A. Belgard makes different specialized cleaning solutions that you can buy for cleaning, dirt, oil, grease, organic, and pet stains. You can also simply mix a solution of soap and warm water in a bucket, brush the pavers with it, and rinse with clean water. For travertine, you can also clean with soap and water but if you get mildew or algae growth on them you may want to kill it will a mild solution of bleach and water. Start with 20% bleach and 80% water in a bucket or sprayer, apply to the travertine, and let it sit for an hour or more on a warm day. If all the stains are not removed, you can reapply again or mix a stronger solution and apply again. Once stains and mildew are removed rinse with a good amount of clean water so that grass and plants are not damaged from the bleach. Never pressure wash your travertine or Belgard pavers as you may damage them and wash out the sand between the joints.
